Conductive and non-conductive coatings are used promote or limit the flow of heat or electrical current into or away from the object that is coated. These coatings have many applications in a variety of applications and industries. Plasma Coatings has a wide variety of metal, metal alloy, carbide matrix, ceramic, and polymer coatings available with these properties as well as combination coatings composed of thermal spray and polymer coatings. There are basically four functional groups of coatings to be considered. All coatings have various combinations of both electrical and thermal properties. Thermally Conductive and Semi-Conductive Coatings do not significantly impede the flow of heat in or out of the substrate that is coated, while at the same time providing other unique surface properties such as cut and abrasion resistance or release. These are used in applications where rapid heat transfer is important, such as heated and chilled rollers.

Thermal Insulating Coatings prevent the substrate from giving up internal heat or absorbing heat from an external source.

Electrically Conductive and Semi-Conductive Coatings do not significantly impede the flow of electricity in or out of the substrate coated, while at the same time providing other unique and desirable surface properties. These coatings are typically used to control or dissipate static electricity (high voltage, low current) and to prevent high voltage discharges/arcing by providing grounded surfaces.

Electrically Insulating Coatings prevent the passage of electricity into or out of the substrate coated. These coatings are used to isolate electrical current to a limited part of a process or to protect the substrate from external voltage sources.

Metal Applied to Surfaces

A full range of coatings; metals, alloys, ceramics, polymers, and combination coatings of thermal spray and polymer coatings. Metals and alloys are both electrically and thermally conductive. Thermoplastic and elastomeric polymers are typically electrically and thermally insulating. Ceramics have a wide variety of properties and can be either thermally insulating or conductive, as well as being electrically insulating or conductive.

Application Techniques

Metals, alloys, and ceramics are coated using a variety of thermal spray processes: wire arc spray, combustion spray, plasma spray, and HVOF spraying. Polymers are applied in liquid or powder form by air spray, airless spray, electrostatic spray, and plural spray.
